The work challenges that people face tend to be increasingly demanding, requiring more preparation, experience and greater efficiency and effectiveness in the tasks we perform. This demand, together with the natural desire to feel good at what we do, often causes the work space within the teams to generate high stress and anxiety, which affects the health of individuals, organizations, overall results, and has a correlation in public policies, due to the sustained increase in medical leaves of absence among workers. In other words, being able to manage healthy teams, thus avoiding stress and anxiety among our collaborators is a fundamental mission for the well-being of the subjects and the achievement of corporate challenges.
There are several reasons why stress is generated within work teams. One of them has to do with mismanagement of the workload or, in other words, when people are assigned more work than they can actually perform. This greater demand generates fatigue and increased pressure on people, which leads to stress and anxiousness in employees.
Another common reason is lack of training. When we do not have the right people within our work teams, either due to lack of training, technical knowledge or lack of skills to perform their work. This is why ongoing training is very important, as better trained teams suffer less stress, work better under pressure, and have fewer work-related illnesses.
A third important dimension to take into account is the culture of the organization where you work. There are organizations that value people staying longer hours at work even if they are not doing anything really productive, or that have practices that do not promote self-care of the teams and therefore encourage stress, low motivation, among other characteristics of unhealthy jobs.
Although organizations have an internal challenge to take better care of people and to make the happiness and well-being of their collaborators part of their strategic lines, this is a shared task. On the one hand, it is essential that each of us chooses a workplace where we feel motivated and like what we do, since high motivation for what we do is a protective factor against stress, burnout and other symptoms generated at work.
Another dimension lies in the bosses, because they are the main cause of well-being or discomfort of workers. For this reason, the people who exercise leadership are the first ones who are called to take care of people, guide with a sense of purpose the work they do, promote self-care, manage goals and workloads, all this with the clear objective of preventing work-related diseases, but also to promote a culture of wellness in the workplace, which increases commitment and well-being, with which they can achieve better results over time and generate higher performance teams.
